Mountains of Energy

IMG_4442IMG_4436
A few posts back, Kyle wrote of the crumbling of the Copley Road area. Well, perhaps Copley Road has found its answer: OIL!

As stated in the minutes of the Akron, Ohio Council Agenda of November 30, 2009, "Ordinance authorizing the Director of Public Service to execute, on behalf of the City, an oil and/or gas lease agreement for the mineral rights of approximately 2.37 acres...to Ohio Valley Energy Systems for completion of the 'Mountain of the Lord Unit No. 1' gas/oil well drilling unit unitization; and declaring an emergency."

I don't believe, given the wordage, that the Lord will see any of the spoils.

Greg, you read my mind with this post. I have seen this thing from I-77. It is literally right on Copley Road in a densely populated area. How is this safe?

There's oil in your car Kyle- surrounded by fire, gasoline, and combustion. All of this going on while hurtling down the highway at 65 mph. You've accepted this as a calculated risk.

So have they.

It reeks of oil outside the drill site.

"They" probably weren't consulted about the accepted risk of having an oil drill in their neighborhood.

Who's the they? Based on the ordinance cited, I guess it is Ohio Valley Energy Systems, Mountain of the Lord Church, and sadly the City of Akron. I doubt the people who live around this rig had much say in the matter, unlike me who freely chooses to ride in my German engineered and Mexican assembled combustion fire box on wheels.

This rig is in the middle of Ward 4 where long time councilwoman Renee Greene was defeated in 2009. I wonder if this was one of her final acts on the way out since it is likely to be very unpopular amongst residents. It seems like the kind of thing a local official looking to keep their job would have a hard time explaining.

Keep in mind, this giant rig is literally right on Copley Road in the middle of what is supposed to be a business district. What message does this send about the economic development prospects of this corridor? As Greg points out tongue in cheek, it isn't good.

Wasn't there something about a year back where the state took away local control of natural resource drilling? I think it might have been for natural gas.

That's a good question Tim. And like a good American who probably voted on the issue, I forget.
