Going For Silver

Westcott 32" silver umbrella
I recently took a road trip up to Dodd Camera in Cleveland to purchase a 32" silver umbrella. I went with the 32" instead of the 48" hoping it would give me a bit more flexibility when dealing with the low ceilings in my house. In the few test shots I took, the coolness of the light seemed sharper. I just sat in a chair in front of a black sheet and took a couple shots. In some of the shots the light looked almost blue. Tim often uses one shoot through and one silver umbrella for his two light setups. I like the combination in his photos and hope to use a similar setup when I get a second flash.

With your flash that close to the umbrella, it's like you're really using a 20" umbrella. I doubt any of the light is hitting the bottom part of the umbrella.

Stop way down and shoot into the umbrella to see where your light is really hitting. It may surprise you.

I was wondering about that. My flash isn't even close to center and I figure that throws the light differently. I screw my ebay trigger on top of the light stand and then my flash mounts into the hotshoe adding about another inch of height. For a large umbrella, it isn't as big of a problem.

It would be nice if I could pivot my flash downward beyond a right angle. That seems to be the only way I could hit the center of the umbrella.
